Berrien Springs High School
Cognitively Impaired Classroom
"Together, inspiring students to think, learn, achieve and care in a global community."
The primary focus of the CI Classroom is the acquisition of vocational/occupational skills and functional academics. Individual, small group and whole group instructional approaches are the teaching methods used on a daily basis.
With the addition of this classroom at the high school level, students have been able to make smooth transitions from classrooms at the Berrien Springs Middle School by being able to continue their secondary education with their peers.
Many of the students have had the opportunity to participate in several of the elective courses offered here at the high school. This opportunity greatly benefits our students in their ability to communicate and work cooperatively with their non-disabled peers in various classes.
Having the opportunity to build interpersonal relationship skills with peers outside of their classroom strengthens the importance of life-long communication skills. This also helps the students in the general education classroom recognize the specific special needs of their peers.
Our students are also given the opportunity to participate in ALL after school extracurricular activities, such as athletics, school sponsored clubs and also fundraising activities at various school events.
Over the past few years we have been able to establish working relationships with local businesses within the community. Students are required to learn skills that will aid them in becoming active and productive participants not only in the school setting, but also in their community.
Currently, in conjunction with Berrien RESA, Michigan Rehabilitation Services and Disability Network, various work study sites have been established. These sites will provide learning opportunities outside of the school setting white at the same time allowing the students the opportunity to establish life-long career aspirations.
